Shigeru Miyamoto made some headlines today with a few choice quotes. Among the tastier tidbits was his desire to get the new Pikmin wrapped up quickly – odd considering how long we’ve been waiting for a single screenshot.
The other one involved Miyamoto wanting to create a new character, pointing out that it’s been 10 years since he introduced Pikmin.
This ties directly into why I actually started writing this post, and it wasn’t about either of the things I mentioned … sort of. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled to hear and update about Pikmin, but this news actually led to a rather high quality post from the NeoGAF frequenting Nintendo spy, Shikamaru Ninja.
“I am another one of these people sort of controlling the Miyamoto helium distribution just because people really hyperbole his contributions to the EAD games. Often, Miyamoto comes up with mandates and rules for the team based on his experience and talent. Basically Miyamoto is credited with things like ‘suggesting Retro to stick to first-person shooter view point,’ ‘creating a game in a garden setting,’ ‘using spherical worlds for Super Mario Galaxy.’ However, there are other people (some even semi-famous in a sense at EAD) who acclimated the actual workload to make those games great. “
The full quote is a little too long to slap into this story, but I definitely recommend reading the full thing. READ MORE

Game Informer has a whopper of an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto mostly discussing all things Super Mario Galaxy 2. There are some other interesting bits in there, too, so be sure to check out the full thing.
Being a rather huge fan of Super Mario Galaxy this interests me greatly.
“The game has been developed and designed so that those who have conquered the prequel, Super Mario Galaxy 1, can feel as if it’s a continuation from the ending of that first game,” Miyamoto said.
“In other words, the difficulty level is set in that kind of sense, so that it’s more difficult for the beginner, and especially more difficult for the beginner who has never played the first game.”
Also, this sort of reminded me that we’re extremely close to the launch of Super Mario Galaxy 2. That dear reader is something to get excited about.

New Nintendo hardware confirmed. But it already has been in the past, sort of.
Nintendo hasn’t been too shy about acknowledging something is in the works, and Shigeru Miyamoto added another “yup” to the pile during a symposium at the 13th Annual Japan Media Arts Festival on Saturday, Andriasang reports.
Along with the brief mention of new hardware, Miyamoto also said he has another MotionPlus title in the works that isn’t Zelda. Basically, it could be anything so have fun with that. Your best place to start? Well, find out what Miyamoto’s current hobby is because that probably has something to do with it.
Miyamoto said this while being honored with a “Special Achievement Prize,” but let’s be honest, the bigger news is that OMG he mentioned a new platform.
We’ll see if GDC truly marks the unveiling of new Nintendo hardware.
Also, Super Mario Galaxy spawned from hamsters … seriously. Read about it over at Andriasang.

I still want to barrel roll. These are the words I offer to one Shigeru Miyamoto who seems quite distraught over the lack of interest in Star Fox in recent years.
“I tend to forget those games [laughs]. I’m a big fan of the Star Fox games. Every time we make a Star Fox game I’m hoping people will enjoy it as much as I do,” Miyamoto said. “Of course the goal every time is to try and make it more and more fun but, at least in Japan, the people that purchase the Star Fox games has decreased over the years. But we still try to make them more fun and hopefully people will see the appeal in those games.” READ MORE

More than both Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo desperately needs to update their console. From a tech point of view, the Wii was behind the times before it even launched, and now a few years later, its limitations are becoming increasingly obvious.
My guess is that Nintendo will be the first to leap into a new console, but when that will be is another question entirely.
Nintendo fans crossing their fingers for a beastly new console better keep themselves in check and just hope that a system as powerful as the 360 or PS3 is delivered. Shigeru Miyamoto wouldn’t offer up much, but he did at least mention what a Wii successor will likely entail. READ MORE

Not surprisingly, Shigeru Miyamoto expects New Super Mario Bros. Wii to have legs. Expect the game to hang around on NPD charts for a long, long time as it’s what the industry knows as an evergreen title.
Miyamoto has been all about the press conferences lately and during a play session of the title, he assured retailers it would be a big seller.
“It’s a Mario that will continue selling even after one year has passed,” he said. READ MORE

On October 24, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto will be presenting a keynote at the Digital Contents Expo in Tokyo. While this event isn’t typically one to generate hype (honestly, I’ve never heard of it), I have a good feeling that Miyamoto’s presence will garner quite a bit of attention this year.
He’s one of the few people in the industry that practically everyone knows and needs no introduction, but for those out of the loop, he’s the dude behind Mario and many, many other Nintendo franchises.
Miyamoto’s speech will cover his work over the past 30 years. There’s no guarantee that he’ll offer up anything in terms of new games, or new media for something like the upcoming Zelda Wii, but Miyamoto does like to surprise us from time to time.

I’m fighting tooth and nail to avoid dropping that label that is both hard and has a core, but Super Mario Galaxy 2 appears to be catering to a market that might be just that. Thankfully, Shigeru Miyamoto used a word that’s far less annoying and has a ring to it that hardcore (and there it goes) never could; that word is veteran.
Apparently Nintendo Power had an interview with every single soul in the industry in their latest issue – so don’t be surprised to see an NP sourced Jack Tretton quote – and they’ve gotten some quality information, too, this time from Miyamoto. READ MORE

Never content with leaving my poor Kid Icarus lovin’ heart alone, Shigeru Miyamoto has at least something to say about the franchise. GoNintendo reports that in an interview with Nintendo Power, the crew pegged Miyamoto with a KI question at E3, which should be in the latest magazine.
In response to Nintendo Power asking where the hell Kid Icarus is on Wii and DS (in nicer words, of course), he had this to say:
“Wait please. I’m really surprised how popular that is. But you are the first person to ask at this E3!” READ MORE
