New Fable III details, screenshots emerge from GDC

Being a Fable II fan and all, I try to keep up with Fable III news even if it requires slogging through tall tales from Peter Molyneux’s mouth. Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy, but even Lionhead fans know the dude talks big talk.

GDC has brings us new Fable III information, and the chaps at Eurogamer have some screenshots – probably the most impressive batch yet.

They also confirmed that John Cleese will provide voice work for the game in the form of a butler. I have no idea who that is, but Eurogamer describes him as a “comedy legend” so I probably should.

His role is actually pretty neat. In Fable III, rather than just cycling through a pause menu, hitting start will send your character into a set of rooms to roam around in. You’ll be able to check out your various clothing arrangements as they hang on mannequins, and it’s in this room that Cleese’s character resides.

“We were inspired by the idea that people kept saying we were making this game with Monty Pythonesque humour, so we got John Cleese as your butler,” Molyneux said.

Cool stuff.

Also, Joystiq confirmed Twitter integration, but who really gives a shit about that?

Oh, and I just looked up John Cleese who is best known for being a member of Monty Python – makes sense.

Fable III co-op vastly improved, so sayeth Molyneux

Putting it bluntly, Fable II’s online multiplayer sucks ass. It’s literally one of the worst co-op games I’ve experienced, and quite frankly, in my mind it just doesn’t exist.

Peter Molyneux is looking to fix that with Fable III, and while I won’t fall into his trap, I will entertain the idea that a cooperative Fable could be fun.

Speaking on one of 1UP’s 800 or so podcasts, Molyneux says he heard the complaints and is addressing them. No long are you some arbitrary henchman that means nothing to the game; you’ll be your guy with your weapons and apparently your dog.

An even bigger problem should be resolved, too.

“I heard you — you don’t wanna be tied to my camera, you wanna go off and do your own thing in my world. Fine, fair enough,” he said.

Good.

Implementing one camera for two dudes in an adventure game is one of the worst ideas ever.

I didn’t do much reporting on X10 because I was too busy messing around with Game of the Year junk, but I certainly followed the event. While I’m not altogether amazed by Fable III’s graphical prowess, I really didn’t expect to be.

If it simply manages to improve upon Fable II, adding in some meaningful gameplay tweaks and, of course, environments to explore, I’m in.

This fall is going to be pretty busy, but I’ll have no problem squeezing in some time for another trip to Albion.

Molyneux: Fable III unveiling may get people ‘super pissed’

Getting excited about the X10 unveiling of Fable III? It’s happening this Thursday, so it’s understandable if you’re a fan of the series. Just be prepared, this is a Peter Molyneux title and many words will be spoken about the game; things that will happen in the game, and things that stand no chance of making it into the final product.

Unlike with most of his releases, he’s nega-hyping the X10 glimpse of Fable III.

“We’re making a big announcement about Fable III in the next couple of weeks [at X10]…I hope I haven’t spoiled some horrible PR surprise. Gulp. We’ll be making some announcements about Fable III and there’s some, wow, there’s some very, very big things happening in Fable,” Molyneux said to Gamereactor.”Bigger than you think, and it’s going to really upset people. I’m really scared when I go out and tell people what it is, they’re going to get super pissed off. They really are. But it’s the right thing to do, man. I’m sure it’s the right thing.”

So yeah, be prepared to get “super pissed.” Better yet, have no expectations at all.

This could very well be a complete non-factor that Molyneux is blowing out of proportion, or maybe Fable III has turned into a dating sim.

Thursday should be interesting.

Fable III announced, trailer released

Apparently this Gamescom thing is a bigger deal than I imagined as Lionhead unveiled Fable III. Not only is there some art for the project, but there’s a trailer as well. Despite having no gameplay, it’s works wonders as a hype trailer and gets me all giddy as Fable II stands as one of my favorite games of 2008, and better yet, one of my favorite games of this generation.

Love the music, too, Mr. Molyneux; it has a Banjo vibe to it.

Reporting from the event, Destructoid updated with some words from Peter Molyneux who says that a dated mechanic has bogged down Fable and Fable II; that mechanic will be eliminated in Fable III. He wouldn’t say what that mechanic is, however.

Fable III takes place after the last DLC Fable II received, which effectively solidified my purchasing of Fable II’s latest DLC. Damn you, marketing geniuses!

Fable III is set to hit sometime in 2010, though no date is specified. If the title does land in 2010, expect it to be late, and expect it to be another reason why 2010 could be the biggest year in gaming we’ve seen in a long time.
