Create your own Ultra Mega Mega Man in Mega Man Universe

This trailer for Mega Man Universe is archaic in Internet years (one day equates to three years, I believe), but I’m posting it because it’s awesome. Plus there’s some new information on the mystery title, so take that.

It’s an XBLA and PSN title that Keiji Inafune says will allow fans of the series to “play as the Mega Man of [their] dreams.”

Inafune’s words are still vague but it sounds like the game will have a create-a-Mega Man option allowing you to design your own hero. Given the multiple of Capcom icons (Ghost ‘n Goblins’ Arthur, shit yeah) seen in the stop-motion announcement trailer, this doesn’t come as too surprising.

He’s still not spilling many details on Universe though it does retain “the classic 8-bit Mega Man feel.” A few blogs have taken this to mean it’ll be 8-bit in appearance, but I’ve yet to see a quote that states that – “feel” and “look” are two totally different things.

Aside from Universe, Inafune hinted at some other upcoming projects to be announced soon. Word is that one hint was in regards to a new Mega Man Legends – a series that I remember everyone hating upon release, but apparently has a cult following.

Enough talking, just watch the video up top.

Capcom predictions have a slight hint of optimism

Capcom got smacked around a bit last year for reasons not necessarily hard to spot. Not this year, they predict as the Japanese developer optimistically lays out the millions of games consumers are going to eat up.

It might be a little too optimistic if I were to guess.

The house ‘o Mega Man predicts Lost Planet 2 to get around 2.2 million in sales worldwide. That’s not the loftiest of goals but considering its mixed reviews and a May 11 launch date – an incredibly packed time to release – me thinks this one will be met with lukewarm reception.

Capcom expects big things from Dead Rising 2 – like, 3 million big. I’m really looking forward to it and all, but Capcom is off their fucking rocker if they think Dead Rising is going to push through 3 million.

The only prediction that might be feasible is Marvel vs Capcom 3, which Capcom has pegged for 2 million for the fiscal year 2010. It’ll probably come on the tail end of that, but I’d expect pretty big sales from the outset.

OK, I take that back, there’s another one that’s not only feasible, but almost guaranteed: Monster Hunter Freedom 3 for PSP is going to be huge in Japan because Japan loves portable Monster Hunter.

Capcom execs certainly have their heads in the clouds; I just hope they’re not surprised when reality strikes.

Capcom profits drop hard

Right now Nintendo’s stealing most of the headlines with profit woes, but there’s another big dog out in Japan seeing all things monetary dip, dip, dip.

Capcom is reporting a 73 percent drop in profit in the past year. It’s not that hard to explain when you look at their pathetic lineup in recent months.

It hurts to say it as a Capcom fan but when you release shit games like Bionic Commando (retail version, of course), Dark Void and yet another Resident Evil on-rails game like Darkside Chronicles, well, the writing is all over the wall.

I’m no market guru, but I have to imagine things are picking up. Super Street Fighter IV is raking in some serious loot (deservedly so), Lost Planet 2 should do well enough at retail, and quite a few folks are hyped for Dead Rising 2.

After going on a bit of a shitfest, it’s nice to see one of my favorite developers get back on track with quality games that, with any luck, will be a hit at retail.

Mosaic Mega Man

Well, this is pretty epic. Jarosh over at NeoGAF created this enormous Mega Man mosaic that stands nearly 4 feet tall and consists of around 1,500 Mega Man screenshots.

The mosaic was both time consuming and pricey, according to jarosh – no surprise there.

There is a method to the madness: screenshots come from play sessions of Mega Man through Mega Man 6, with one screenshot accounting for every pixel used to create Mega Man himself.

Damn near every screenshot is unique, while the bottom row consists of the box art and cartridges of the classic Mega Man games.

The full piece is up top, but you should head over to NeoGAF to get a closer look of what jarosh’s art is made of.

Yes yes y’all, new Super Street Fighter IV

Capcom nailed its ad campaign with Super Street Fighter IV, mixing Street Fighter aesthetics with a hip hop feel and shit just works.

There’s a stylish new trailer to gawk at (up top) and some magazine ads you can check out over at GameSetWatch.

I’ve been sold on Super Street Fighter IV for a while and now I’m even more sold(er). For $40, I can snag the definitive version of SFIV complete with 10 new characters and a much needed lobby system – so yeah, I’m going to do that.

Hit the arcades with Final Fight: Double Impact

I love classic games, but old school brawlers haven’t quite stood the test of time in most regards. Still, Final Fight: Double Impact is tempting considering it’s bundled with Magic Sword and only costs 800 points.

I’ve never actually played Magic Sword, but it looks interesting enough and the price is right for the bundle.

Double Impact launches on XBLA April 14 and on PSN April 15. Joystiq says it has drop-in co-op, optional graphical filters and a remixed soundtrack.

Even if you have no interest in this package, you can’t deny how awesome the optional classic arcade cabinet mode is.

Final SSFIV character brings muscle, oil to the battle

Uh, what?

The final new character for Super Street Fighter IV has been announced and he’s interesting to say the least. His name is Hakan and he appears to be Satan with a plastic blue fro. Also, he’s a goofy bastard that oils himself up to perform slippery wrestling moves on his opponents.

Again: what?

He’s a good addition though. Hakan is extremely goofy, but brings character to the roster – he’s certainly better than that lame ass Seth.

Monster Hunter Tri TV spot whacks Deadliest Catch

As Capcom’s Chris Svensson put it in this Gamasutra interview, Monster Hunter Tri is getting a “massive marketing push, the likes of which I’m not sure anyone has seen on a Wii title from a third party.”

While “massive” is a pretty bold word, Capcom is putting some serious effort into making Tri a big seller here in America, starting with the March 8 demo coming to GameStop. It helps that Nintendo is doing all they can to help, too, but I’m guessing that has something to do with Reggie and crew fiercely looking for a big-selling core third party title.

No doubt Capcom is hoping for a big success, too. With Tri, they’re trying to establish the Monster Hunter franchise in territories outside of Japan; a task that’s proven hard for the publisher.

A couple of TV spots have made it online and they’re surprisingly good. The commercials mocks less forms of hunting (how do you compete with monsters?)– it’s good stuff.

One is up top, the other is after the jump. READ MORE

Capcom one-ups EA with GameStop exclusive Lost Planet 2 maps

You gotta love shitty industry trends aimed solely to make money and screw consumers.

The hot thing right now for publishers is to give out exclusive content at select retailers. GameStop nearly always gets the best deal of the bunch which makes me die a little on the inside because I have an indescribable rage toward that store.

BioWare was in no way right for splitting up arbitrary armor pieces as pre-order bonuses across multiple retailers, but even shadier still are things like EA’s decision (big shocker, EA owns all three developers in question) to lock out a fucking mode in games if you don’t buy it at the right store.

Both Army of Two: The 40th Day (which nobody should buy anyways) and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 have GameStop exclusive modes that’ll eventually be unlocked for everyone else sometime after launch – it’s complete bullshit.

It’s only getting worse. READ MORE

Wii stacked in early 2010; Other M, SMG2, S&P2 all hit soon

The live blogging is over at the Nintendo Media Summit and for what might be the first time in a long time, Nintendo didn’t disappoint. Today’s updates are going to be very focused around the event, so if that ain’t your thing, well, check back tomorrow.

As expected by IGN, Nintendo did confirm the launch date for Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M, but things are far better than expected. Galaxy 2 launches on May 23 with Other M coming shortly after on June 27.

Sin & Punishment 2 also got a date and a new name. Sin & Punishment: Star Successor hits North America on June 7. It makes sense for Nintendo to drop the 2 from the title, we only ever saw the original on the Virtual Console and even then, it was in all Japanese.

Capcom was there to show off Monster Hunter Tri, another heavy hitter for the Wii in early 2010. It’s coming April 20 bundled with the Classic Controller Pro.

Bringing Monster Hunter Tri from a “maybe” to a “definite” in my eyes is the free online play in North America. Not only that, but pre-ordering it at GameStop nets you a demo that comes March 8 and 500 Nintendo Points good for Wii or DS when you pick it up on April 20 – sweet deal.

There were a ton of great announcements, and the Wii is stacked in early 2010. It’ll be interesting to see how Nintendo handles the rest of the year (hint: Zelda would be nice).
