Ubisoft’s bomb hits Toronto

The exciting megaton Ubisoft dropped on us yesterday was… a new studio being opened in Toronto.

According to Ubisoft’s Press Release, the new studio will create more than 800 new jobs in the area and the Canadian government is putting a sizable investment into the company.

“[This] announcement marks a strategic move for Ubisoft as we continue to expand our internal development force,” President and CEO of Ubisoft Yves Guillemot said in today’s statement.  “We’re excited to be able to count on the exceptional local talent, who will contribute to our accelerated growth and will have a profound impact on the video game industry with the excellence of their creativity.”
Ubisoft’s press release promises that the Toronto studio will be working on “Triple A games” (yes, that ridiculous phrase again) and “creating brands with universal appeal.”

At first it’s easy to feel disappointment, particularly when hoping for updates on Beyond Good and Evil 2, a revealing of GRAW 3, or even for a new creative property.

However the initial disappointment is muted with the realization that an extra 800 people in Ubisoft’s workforce can only mean more upcoming games will be in development, which means more people to work on Ghost Recon and other favorites.  Not to mention the promise of new brands eh?

Expectedly, Ubisoft also released media for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed 2, Shaun White World Stage, Rabbids Go Home, and Tom Clancy: Splinter Cell Conviction.  While I’m sure these trailers will be uploaded to the regular spots soon enough, they’re available for download now at Ubisoft’s FTP press kit.
