The Grinder goes multiplatform, looks surprisingly good
High Voltage Studios were pretty big on the whole “bring core titles to Wii” theory and while they didn’t see the highest form of success with The Conduit, it didn’t do that bad. Take their 350,000 in worldwide sales for a game I didn’t, uh, care for, and I’d say they made out pretty good.
But there’s that whole other market of millions and millions of gamers on the 360 and PS3 they’re missing out on, both of which are crowds that go unquestioned as to whether they prefer a more casual or core experience.
So while it may be a little surprising to hear that The Grinder was just announced as a multiplatform game to be spread across the Wii, PS3, 360, and PC, I guess it really shouldn’t be.
I feel like this is another case where the fanbase is going to overreact and feel “betrayed” buy a studio out to make a buck, so if you’re one of those dudes, just stop.
I was actually prepared to shit on The Grinder because having played The Conduit, I’m not exactly filled with confidence in HVS. The latest trailer though? It actually looks good.
It’s been compared thoroughly to Left 4 Dead, but HVS would sooner liken it to Hunter: The Reckoning. Either way, this short teaser trailer looks good and it’s certainly the most technically impressive High Voltage game. It’s never stated whether the trailer is the Wii version or an HD version, but I’d put my money on HD.
In the end, going multiplatform is the best thing for The Grinder. Wii owners are still getting an online shooter, and HVS gets to test their abilities with the 360 and PS3.
It’s a big wait though, The Grinder won’t launch until October 2011.

Perfectly reasonable. They can release a shooter for their intended Wii audience but still make money via the PS3/360.
