2010: A case of insatiable thirst, or truly a remarkable year?

metroid-other-m-1

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this yet, but next year is going to be huge. It wasn’t too long that I made a quick thought on the subject mixed in with some The Last Guardian news. However, a month and a half later and now 2010 is even more beastly than ever before thanks to a few key delays.

It’s funny the way things turn out. Every year it seems like we’re stuck in the same frame of mind where we think “next year is going to blow this one out of the water.” It’s our insatiable thirst for more and more games (that we can’t possibly afford) driving those thoughts and it’ll likely never change.

But I’m going to make the argument that 2010 is different, and it isn’t just another year of gamers thinking too far ahead in the future. READ MORE

Lost in the holiday sea

If there’s one title that deserves more attention at this site, it’s Endless Ocean 2. OK, so there are probably a lot of games that deserve more attention than I give them, but my coverage can only reach so far.

In fact, I managed to totally avoid the game at E3 despite having passed its booth a few times over thinking “man, I should really go check that out.” Nevertheless, I never did. Perhaps that’s for the better though as the Endless Ocean experience is based around calm, soothing environments, which is exactly what E3 isn’t. READ MORE

Sega knows Sonic isn’t fun, don’t expect overnight results

werehogwall_2

Sonic is such a joke these days. When Sega isn’t busy turning him into a werehog, they’re busy sticking him with a gigantic sword in hand, roaming medieval lands. Clearly, things aren’t like they used to be.

Unlike Mario, the little blue guy made a poor transition into 3D and has since dropped the ball over and over again. When questioned by Industry Gamers, Sega of America’s VP of marketing Sean Ratcliffe appears to be aware of the issue, but don’t look for anything to be done anytime soon. READ MORE

Boolat brings topatoi to North America

I can’t say I’ve ever heard of Ukrainian developer Boolat Games, but they’re cranking away at topatoi, a PSN platformer, and the first video I’ve seen looks quite nice. After a visit to their website, it appears they’ve only ever dabbled in mobile, iPhone and PC games, so this is their first step into console territory.

Europe has had topatoi since July 2, but North America will be waiting until fall to get their hands on the game.

A quick search for reviews yielded only a couple of results and they weren’t exactly glowing. This is a little off-putting, but who knows, maybe they’ll tweak a few things here and there to make it worth our while. Probably not, but you never know.

A darker side of Disney

image-o-matic.x

It seems odd that one of the darkest games (not the blood and guts kinds) in a while is going to be based in the classic world of Disney, but by all accounts, this appears to be the case. If the art wasn’t enough to convince you, CVG has an anonymous source who has filled them in on some story and gameplay elements.

If the source is correct, the game revolves around old and forgotten Disney characters seeking revenge on Mickey who is the Disney icon. Gameplay details help clue us in on why Junction Point looked to Wii, as players will paint their way through the game. CVG says players will draw, etch and erase through levels, which I’d imagine mixes in with the rumored platforming gameplay.

We’ll definitely keep an eye on this one.

Turtles in Time Re-Shelled sees price reduction

1091224246-00

As a huge TMNT nut, I stand by my statement that the new XBLA remake is not really what I wanted. The transition into 2.5D took a definite turn for the worse, and I’m not convinced that the developers Ubisoft assigned to the project have a clear indication of what makes the Turtles and Turtles in Time so damn charming.

All that aside, it’s still the goddamn Ninja Turtles and this Re-Shelled edition is based on my favorite of all the Turtles licensed games. That coupled with a few friends that I know will be picking it up, and it’s a sure buy for me – well, it would be a sure buy if it wasn’t so damn pricey.

Well, good news just rolled in as the absolutely overpricing of 1200 points has just been reduced to 800 points for reasons unknown to man. I suppose the mighty voice of the consumer may have been behind this; no company likes legions of forum goers screaming in their face.

TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled hits next week as the next entry into the Summer of Arcade.

Square starts another countdown, hidden art emerges

art1

Square loves countdowns and they’ve got another ticking just for you (and me). While there’s no indication of what it could possibly be, people have stumbled upon some hidden art buried within the files of the page, Siliconera reports.

Taking that into consideration, I suppose saying there’s nothing to go by is a bit of an exaggeration. At the very least, there are some lovely pieces of art to clue us in. Square Enix currently has two unused trademarks, Gyromancer and Lord of Arcana, so it could be one of those. READ MORE

Judge hits pause on Brütal Legend case

brutal_legend_gdc_preview_screens_7

The final arguments and formal ruling on Activision’s lawsuit against Brütal Legend developer Double Fine Productions have been postponed a week, but the presiding judge indicated that he’s leaning in Double Fine’s favor.

That’s right. California Judge Craig Karlan has tentatively ruled to deny Activision’s motion, telling their attorneys, “I can’t say there’s a likelihood of success here.”

However, as much as I’d love to proclaim, “Suck it Activision! Brütal Legend rock on!” that would be preemptive… The full attorney arguments for both sides are still pending. Despite his leanings so far, Judge Karlan has said that neither side has an apparent upper hand in the case and the final decision “is going to be a close call.”

Gearbox not working with Halo; also, we like posting this image

halo3odst

Despite what was suggested yesterday, it would seem that Gearbox may have nothing to do with Halo, after all. A tweet heard far and wide from a Halo Waypoint account proclaimed there’s no connection between the studio and Halo.

“For the record, Gearbox is NOT working on a Halo title for Microsoft.”

I avoided posting this when it first sprung up because I wasn’t entirely sure how legitimate the account is. Well folks, it’s the real deal according to Joystiq. The site says they’ve confirmed as much through none other than Major Nelson himself.

Well, there you go. So long as Microsoft isn’t lying to our face, Gearbox isn’t making a new Halo.

And I think to myself, Super Mario World

Apparently it’s old, but like the fellas Destructoid, I’d never seen this video before. Brentalfloss is the man behind the clip, singing as if he’s Louis Armstrong. Now take the classic “What a Wonderful World” song, give it a classic SNES spin, call it “Super Mario World,” and you’re starting to get the idea.

For as silly as the concept and lyrics are, it hit me deep in my nostalgic gamer’s heart. Based on comments at both Destructoid and YouTube, I’m not the only one.

Mixing a gaming theme with the already sad, but happy sounding “What a Wonderful World” is a brutal dose of nostalgia for those that remember playing Super Mario World, staring with eyes glazed at a glowing TV screen. Hell, I still remember playing Super Mario World for the first time in vivid detail with Michael and two cousins sitting nearby, passing the controller.

Again, I know it’s supposed to be humorous, but damn does it pull on the heartstrings and warp me back to being a kid.
